Beginning May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require all travelers flying within the United States to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, or another acceptable form of ID such as a U.S. passport. This change, although delayed several times, is now fast approaching—and it’s time to get prepared.
REAL ID is a federal requirement established by Congress after 9/11 to set uniform standards for the issuance of sources of identification, like driver’s licenses. If your current state ID does not have a gold star in the top right corner, chances are it is not REAL ID-compliant.
Why This Matters for You and Your Business
Whether you’re a frequent flyer for business, attending conferences, or traveling for leisure, this change affects every American adult who uses domestic air travel. But it’s more than just air travel. Many federal buildings and nuclear facilities also require REAL ID for access.
As a member of the Illinois State Black Chamber of Commerce, staying informed and ahead of regulations like this can give your business a serious edge.
Here’s How Chamber Membership Helps You Stay Ready:
1. Access to Timely Updates & Resources
The Chamber regularly distribute updates on new policies and government requirements that affect both individuals and businesses. As a member, you’re kept in the loop without needing to dig through federal websites or news cycles.
2. Streamlined Access to Support Services
Not sure where to start? TSA.gov and your local DMVs, passport offices, and travel agencies who are already equipped to help members fast-track the process.
3. Business Travel Perks
For business owners and employees who travel often, having a REAL ID ensures uninterrupted access to airports and federal locations. Some travel organizations often offer deals on accommodations, transportation, and other business-related travel needs.
4. Demonstrating Leadership and Compliance
Being proactive about government requirements like REAL ID can set your business apart as organized, trustworthy, and up-to-date—important qualities in today’s competitive market.
What You Need to Do to Get a REAL ID
According to TSA.gov, to obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or ID, you’ll need to visit your local DMV and provide:
• Proof of identity (e.g., a birth certificate or valid passport)
• Proof of Social Security number
• Two proofs of address (e.g., utility bills, lease agreements)
• Proof of lawful status (if applicable)
Check with your state’s DMV for exact requirements, as some documents may vary.
Final Boarding Call: Don’t Get Left Behind
The May 7, 2025 deadline is not a suggestion—it’s a federal mandate. If you show up at the airport without a REAL ID or passport, you will not be allowed to board your flight.
This is your opportunity to lead by example. By becoming a Chamber member—or deepening your engagement if you already are—you gain the tools, connections, and knowledge to navigate not just the REAL ID rollout but the many changes impacting our communities and businesses.
Be ready. Stay compliant. Lead with confidence.
